Our Municipal Structure
On 3 December 1926 Kuilsriver formed its very first Local Management Board which consisted of 4 members. This status was later elevated to Town Board on 22 November 1940 and finally, on 4 December 1950, Kuils River attained its full municipal status and became a level two administrative region.
The town council assumed a coat of arms in 1955, designed by Ivan Mitford-Barberton, and registered it with the Cape Provincial Administration in January 1956. The shield was divided into three horizontal sections: (1) a running buck on a silver background, (2) a golden yoke on a red background, and (3) four silver and blue stripes with wavy edges. The crest was a bull’s head, and adopted the motto Via trita via tuta (“The beaten path is the safe path”).
With the dawn of the new South Africa municipal structures underwent significant changes post 1994. Kuils River was subsequently absorbed into the City of Cape Town municipality in 2000, dividing the region into 21 subcouncils, culminating 116 wards. The town is currently managed under Subcouncil 21, falling predominantly within Wards 11 and 19, with a small exception falling into Wards 8 and 14.
Boasting 13 public and several private schools, 4 malls, all major retail and food outlets, 2 expansive sport-fields, tennis courts, a bowls green, over 55 parks, a camping facility, a golf course, an indoor cricket arena, an industrial area and now more than 70 000 residents, Kuils River municipal representatives are under relentless pressure to keep up with the constant growth experienced in the town.
Our Historic Canon
Over 400 years old, this historic cannon spent much of its life at the Cape of Good Hope Castle in Table Bay. Originally used to defend the bay’s anchorage during the 1600s, the cannon eventually wore down and was retired to serve as a signal piece on Skoonheid farm, positioned on Asiakop hill (also known as Kanonkop). From this high vantage point, it signaled the arrival of ships in Table Bay to alert inland towns to bring their goods to market.
On May 29, 1972, the cannon was donated to the Kuils River Municipality, where it was placed on a face-brick base shaped like the Castle of Good Hope. In celebration of Heritage Month, the municipality undertook a full restoration of the cannon from July to September 2016, preserving this piece of history for future generations.
