Welcome to Kuils River

Nestled approximately 35 kilometres east of Cape Town’s bustling CBD in the Western Cape, Kuils River is conveniently located at the doorstep to the famous Cape Winelands. It runs adjacent to the R300, with the town’s primary thoroughfare being the R102 (Van Riebeeck Road), linking westward to Bellville and south-eastward to Somerset West.

 

Embracing a tranquil out-of-town landscape, Kuils River caters to diverse lifestyles, from modest residences to elegant living, with luxurious estates and retirement villages gracing the town’s expanses. “Kuila”, as the town is fondly called, is the name embraced by over 70 000 locals who calls Kuils River home. The pride people feel for Kuils River runs deep — so much so that locals have coined their own terms of affection: ‘Kuilove’ and ‘Kuilaliefde’. Simple words that say everything about their bond with the town. It is clear that the town offers a charm that appeals to its residents and visitors alike.

Municipal

 

Officially recognised as a town in 1898, Kuils River gained its municipal status in 1950 but was absorbed into the City of Cape Town municipality in 2000. It is now managed under Subcouncil 14, falling within Wards 11 and 19, with a very small exception falling into Wards 8 and 14.

History

 

In the early 1600’s the expanse was known as ‘De Boss’ and due to its ideal location the area was used as a cattle pen for stock farmers. Around 1680, the Dutch East Indian Company decided to use the settlement as a refreshment stop for regiments traveling inland.

Summer in Kuils River is hot and dry with long sunny days. From December to February, temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F). The town becomes lively with braais, sport, and social gatherings, while the Cape Doctor wind brings some relief and shapes daily routines.

Autumn is milder, with temperatures between 18°C and 28°C (64°F to 82°F) from March to May. The heat fades, evenings cool, and the pace slows, creating a more balanced and comfortable environment for work, school, and outdoor activity.

Winter is cooler and wetter, with temperatures from 8°C to 18°C (46°F to 64°F) between June and August. Cold fronts bring rain and overcast days, while rugby season continues in muddy conditions, often testing players and affecting match schedules.

Spring brings warmer days, with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F) from September to November. Rain decreases, gardens revive, and outdoor activity increases as the town becomes active again, with more visible community projects and events.
